Grade 8 - Due Wednesday, September 10, 2014

"After being homeschooled for years, Auggie Pullman is about to start fifth grade, but he’s worried: How will he fit into middle-school life when he looks so different from everyone else? Auggie has had 27 surgeries to correct facial anomalies he was born with, but he still has a face that has earned him such cruel nicknames as Freak, Freddy Krueger, Gross-out and Lizard face. Though “his features look like they’ve been melted, like the drippings on a candle” and he’s used to people averting their eyes when they see him, he’s an engaging boy who feels pretty ordinary inside. He’s smart, funny, kind and brave, but his father says that having Auggie attend Beecher Prep would be like sending “a lamb to the slaughter.”

Palacio divides the novel into eight parts, interspersing Auggie’s first-person narrative with the voices of family members and classmates, wisely expanding the story beyond Auggie’s viewpoint and demonstrating that Auggie’s arrival at school doesn’t test only him, it affects everyone in the community. Auggie may be finding his place in the world, but that world must find a way to make room for him, too. A memorable story of kindness, courage and wonder." Kirkus Reviews

  2. Kindness can define a person and sometimes spur that person to greatness. Being kind has many benefits. When a person is kind to someone, it is most likely that the person will leave a good impression. Kindness propels a person because if an individual is kind to someone then that someone will most likely be kind back. Kindness can mold an individual and sometimes lead that person to success.

  3. Courage can mold an individual and sometimes drive that person to success.
Being courageous can make a person who they are. To me, the definition of courage is someone who is not afraid to be themselves even when they know they are going to get judged. Whether it is wearing a silly sweater to school one day or having a different answer than everyone else in the class, the people who are brave are the ones that do not let it get to their head. Courage can not only shape a person, but can also propel them to victory.

  4. Character can shape a person into who they are meant to be and may carry that person to greatness.
In the book wonder by RJ Palacio, the main  character August Pullman was born with a facial disorder. Through many years of ridicule and embarrassment Auggie starts his first year of school in the fifth grade. August has great character because of how he is able to grow to withstand the harsh people around him. His character molded him into a mentally strong and socially strong person. His character is strong because he is able to bear these hardships through backstabbing friendships, bullying, and embarrassment. Character not only creates the person they are, it defines them.

  5. Friendship can define a person and sometimes propel that person to greatness. There are some great examples in the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. This book is about a kid with a disfigured face. He has been home schooled his whole life and never had any friends. At school kids make fun of him until eventually he finds a friend. This friend pulls him out of his comfort zone to meet new people. Having a companion can help you through hard times and that person can sometimes push you to greatness.

  6. Character can exemplify a person and sometimes motivate that person to excellence. To me, this means that a person’s morals and personality make them who they are. In the book Wonder, by R.J. Pallacio, a lot of people judge August by his outside appearance because his face is deformed. The people who get to know August see that he is actually a really nice person. People should be judged by character, not physical appearance.
